The Associated Press reports that Miki Sudo proudly took home the win at the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July women’s hot dog eating contest at Coney Island, where she confidently devoured 33 hot dogs in just 10 minutes.
Sudo, who has now won the competition ten times, fell short of her previous record of 51 hot dogs. The event, a staple since 1972, attracts large crowds to the original Nathan’s Famous restaurant.
Michelle “Cardboard Shell” Lesco finished second with 22.75 hot dogs, up from third last year. Domenica Dee, hosting “Dee Street Eats,” debuted and placed third.
The event took place in warm, 80-degree weather, which may have affected performance. Sudo’s husband noticed that she looked somewhat nervous or overheated before the contest started, possibly influencing her results.
Major League Eating commentator George Shea remarked during the event that “the dogs are slow today,” suggesting that the conditions might have been challenging for all participants.
Although she did not break her own record, Sudo’s victory cements her status as a dominant force in competitive eating. The men’s competition, featuring 16-time winner Joey Chestnut, was scheduled to follow.
