Massachusetts native Karen Read is accused of killing her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O'Keefe. Prosecutors say she hit him with her car and left him to freeze in the snow in January 2022, while the defense has argued that Read was framed for O'Keefe's death and that some of O'Keefe's fellow officers may have killed him during a fight. The case has divided Read's Massachusetts community into several factions, spawning a #FreeKarenRead hashtag. Read's first trial, in 2024, ended with a hung jury, and she's currently being retried in a Massachusetts court.
O'Keefe's death and Read's trial are at the heart of A Body In The Snow: The Trial of Karen Read, a three-part docuseries on Investigation Discovery that helps fill in many of the details surrounding the case.
